Reimagining Interim Housing: Transforming our Communities’ Approaches to Sheltering People
The Reimagining Interim Housing project has developed guidance to support longer-term efforts to transform our approaches to sheltering people, as well as improvements to current programs that can be made in the near term. This guidance now includes the first-ever national standards for shelter and interim housing programs. The standards were developed with extensive input from with people with lived expertise, people who work within programs, and people who lead homelessness response systems.
National Standards for Shelter and Interim Housing Programs
This document provides detailed standards, and relevant policies and practices, that communities, funders, and programs should be striving to achieve, focused on upholding people’s dignity and safety and supporting people to secure housing and achieve their other goals. The Reimagining Interim Housing project has also provided an editable version of the standards to support and encourage their use and adaptation. (New September 2026)
